Visual Impairment

This week in biomed we covered visual impairments. After learning about common causes for visual impairments on Monday we spent the rest of the week learning braille. We first learned how brail is designed. It is based on a series of six dot units. Each letter has its own orientation of raised dots within this unit. We learned a mnemonic to be able to understand braille on an elementary level. After we developed an understanding, we learned how to write in braille using an awl. This is much, much easier said than done. This is because you are required to write backwards because you have to flip the page over in order to have raised dots. After we got an “understanding” of how to write in braille or braille, a pack of playing cards was donated to one of the deaf and blind schools.

On Thursday of this week, we got to teach some of the 6th grade classes about the Luke telehealth robot as well as presenting the biomed and STEMM facilities from an official from the board of education. I really enjoy getting to talk about what we have going on and showing people that we have a bit more going on than just some boring old classes.
